Voter Registration Receives Ballot Call Devices to Assist Voters with Disabilities

October 5, 2009

In conjunction with the State Election Commission, the Help America Vote Act (HAVA), and the Federal Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Aiken County Registration & Elections has received additional voting access for individuals with disabilities.

The system is called Ballot Call, which helps disabled voters to cast a curbside ballot from their vehicle at their precinct on Election Day if they wish.

Here’s how it works:

The voter arrives at the polling place where he would see the Ballot Call device outside the building. The disabled voter will then press the button to request assistance. The bell rings inside the precinct notifying the poll worker that a voter needs assistance. The poll worker takes the voting machine out to the voter where the ballot is then cast. Aiken County will start using Ballot Call in June 2010 for the Democratic and Republican Primary Elections. Aiken County poll workers will be trained on the set up and use of Ballot Call.
