Major studies have found tobacco smoke is a major contributor to indoor air pollution, and that breathing secondhand smoke (also known as environmental tobacco smoke) is a cause of disease in healthy nonsmokers. Some of these diseases are heart disease, stroke, respiratory disease and lung cancer. |

The Environmental Protection Agency has determined that secondhand smoke cannot be reduced to safe levels in businesses by high rates of ventilation and air filters do not eliminate known toxins in secondhand smoke.
Second hand smoke is particularly hazardous to elderly people, individuals with cardiovascular disease and impaired respiratory functions.
In an effort to make the unincorporated areas of Aiken County more healthy areas of this County, a smoking regulation will be instituted.
Beginning June 1, 2007, Aiken County will begin regulating smoking in the unincorporated areas of Aiken County. Smoking is prohibited in all public places and sports arenas including the following: Restaurants, Convention Centers, Elevators, Health Care Facilities, Licensed child care and adult care facilities, Banks, Attached Bars, Educational Facilities and Laundromats. For the complete list of prohibited buildings and areas, please download the smoking regulation ordinance.
For additional information, please contact the Administrators Office at 803-642-2012 or the Aiken County Sheriffs Office at 803.-642-1769. |
