In 2004, Aiken County was awarded a $200,000 from EPA to assess the Seminole Mill site. As a result of that assessment, the county is aware of the contamination there. The recently awarded grant will pay for asbestos cleanup, removal of debris, cleanup of storage tanks and their contents, and general cleanup of the property. The incompletely burned material left from the fire in 1996 will also be cleaned up. The county anticipates acquiring the Seminole Mill property in late May from the current owner.
Community meetings held in January 2007 led to a preliminary redevelopment plan for the two properties (86 acres). Redevelopment of Seminole will occur first. Preliminary redevelopment of Seminole includes affordable housing, passive park, and senior or assisted housing.
Clearwater is currently owned by a private citizen, and the county will be working with him on the environmental assessment.
Additional funds for brownfields cleanup were included in the 2004 Capital Projects Sales Tax approved by voters. |
