Last month, the Aiken County Council and the Operations Recreation Association (ORA) reached an agreement that will transfer ownership of the ORA Complex to the Aiken County Parks, Recreation, and Tourism (PRT) Department. This acquisition will open up the 210 acre parcel for full use by all citizens of Aiken County and will enable an influx of sorely needed funds for immediate maintenance needs for the developed portion of the park. |

The parcel itself is naturally beautiful, with approximately forty percent comprising of undeveloped forest and a picturesque pond. The remainder has some development, including a four field softball complex, a soccer field, a nine hole par 3 golf course and an observatory. A financial assessment is planned as soon as possible after the deal is closed to determine the long range plan for our newest park.
The acquisition of this yet to be renamed park will accomplish PRT and Council’s desire to move toward a district park system. Doing so would consolidate resources into fewer but larger parks and therefore enable the delivery of more efficient services and facilities.
It is unsure at this time when the deal will be officially finalized but PRT has already begun the assessment of the grounds so that the most serious needs can be addressed as soon as possible. While this deal has taken a lot longer than anyone initially anticipated, the reward should be worth the wait.
For anyone interested in seeing one of the future gems in the Aiken County park system, the complex is located on Boyd Pond Road south of Aiken off of Silver Bluff Road. |
