Sheriff Partners With Crimestoppers and Community to Dime Out Drug Dealers

September 25, 2006

During a news conference in Aiken on June 21 Sheriff Michael Hunt unveiled the newest initiative to encourage citizens to report drug activity and other crime throughout Aiken County.

“If you know someone who is running drugs or involved in other criminal activity, call Crimestoppers of the Midlands,” said Sheriff Hunt from the base of a new billboard. “This successful program pays good money for good information, and it empowers citizens take action to help keep our county safe.” The 12x24 billboard, near the intersection of Jefferson Davis Highway and Highway 118, in Aiken, encourages citizens to “dime out a drug dealer” by calling the Crimestoppers toll-free number: (888) 559-TIPS (8477). Callers do not give their name. They are assigned a caller code, which they then use to check on the progress of a case and to claim their reward. Cases solved as a result of a tip to Crimestoppers are evaluated using a points system, which determines the amount of the reward from $50 to $1000. Crimestoppers is a private, non-profit organization started in the Midlands in 1982 to combat crime in the area. To date, information received through the organization has solved more than 4,400 cases and helped 41 participating law enforcement agencies recover property and seize narcotics totaling $14,453,367.
