Identity Thieves Posing as Court Officials

June 2, 2006
The Aiken County Sheriff's Office, in cooperation with Aiken County Clerk of Court, reminds citizens to never give out their Social Security number, credit card numbers or other personal information when they receive a telephone call.

Nine states report identity thieves, posing as court officials, are calling citizens claiming they failed to report for jury duty. Victims are informed a warrant has been issued for their arrest. The thieves then ask for personal information for "verification" purposes.

The Aiken County Clerk of Court obtains information on prospective jurors through South Carolina Court Administration. It does not routinely call prospective jurors to request personal information.

The jury duty fraud has been reported in Michigan, Ohio, Texas, Arizona, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Oregon, and Washington.
