| Four Aiken County Government locations are now using a new high-speed fiber computer network to improve information sharing between County offices. |

The County Complex, the Judicial Center, the Law Enforcement Center, and the Detention Center are linked using Gigabit Ethernet, which operates at 1000 megabits per second. The previous connections ran at 1.5 megabits/second. For comparison, dial-up connections usually operate at around 0.048 megabits/second.
These are the first four locations on the new local network that is available to enhance distance learning involving local education institutions and local industries. Construction funding for this network was provided by a $1.4 million grant from the SC Department of Commerce, using funds from the tobacco settlement. |
