The US Census Bureau estimates that Aiken County's population grew from 142,552 to 146,736 as of July 1, 2003. That increase of 4,184 persons moved Aiken County ahead of Berkeley County to be South Carolina's ninth largest county in population.
In the local area, Aiken County grew by 2.935% compared to 9.203% for Columbia County, Georgia (97,505). Augusta-Richmond County lost 0.814% of its population, down to 198,149.
