The Aiken County COBRA (Chemical, Ordinance, Biological, Radiological) Team is composed of local emergency responders from diverse backgrounds: law enforcement, fire services, emergency medical services, emergency management, public health and communications. This specialized team trains for response to weapons of mass destruction incidents. The team can also respond to hazardous materials events and natural disasters in order to provide support and equipment to emergency responders.
 
Functions and Responsibilities:
  • To rapidly respond to and assist jurisdictions in effectively addressing the consequences of critical incidents involving weapons of mass destruction
  • Providing information concerning protective actions to responders and the general public
  • Decontamination operations
  • Medical management operations
  • Coordination of law enforcement operations
  • Communications support
  • Logistical support
  • Training on different types of hazardous materials and specialized equipment
  • Participation in statewide drills and exercises with personnel from the South Carolina Emergency Management Division (www.scemd.org) and other COBRA team members throughout the state
 
Notable Accomplishments:
  • Participation in the 2003 statewide weapons of mass destruction exercise which was the largest emergency response exercise in South Carolina’s history
  • Team member completion of specialized training in ordnances (New Mexico), Chemical/Biological (Alabama), Toxicology (Maryland)
